Remote monitoring and support help increase uptime

More, better, faster. It's a mantra for any commodity manufacturer trying to gain a footholdin the market.

A paper mill in the American Midwest is also very familiar with the slogan. While the paper mill makes

corrugated paper, a common commodity from recycled paper, its operating model is anything but ordinary.

A few years ago, one of the mill's older paper machines began showing signs of wear and inefficiency,

solutions. The Automation retrofitted machine features an PowerFlex 755 AC drive

system that provides variable speed motor control for the wet end, dryer, reel and winder. The control architecture

consists of 30 inverters and motors with a power range of 5-400 hp. The machine is also equipped with an

ControlLogix programmable automation controller to integrate the drive system and perform all

control and motion control functions.

After this difficult journey of installation and commissioning, the plant's management realized

that the small team they had assembled was not sufficient for the ongoing maintenance needs

going forward.So they decided to use remote monitoring to support machine maintenance.

A team from this paper mill visited another company's steel mill and spoke with the mill's lead

engineer,and learned that they had had positive results using Automation's services. After

discussions,the team was more convinced at the time that a Automation Assurance turnkey

integrationservice contract should be signed.

After that, details were provided from a financial perspective for the engineers running the machines

and the support and support agreement. The analysis was excellent, and the labor savings over the

life cycle were staggering.

Currently, the Rock team deploys automation to provide real-time application-level industrial support

for the plant. Support includes remote monitoring of data from over 2,000 devices, ancillary services

related to changes and additions, and quarterly performance checks.
